The chief motives for the writing of the present book were two. The first of these was to supply a general elementary text-book which would meet the demands of the average student beginner a little more adequately than has been done hitherto. After ten years' experience in teaching a first course in Psychology, I have become convinced that the mode of attack usually followed fails to supply the student with the sort of introduction into the science of mind that will enable him, on the one hand, to connect his Psychology with everyday life, and, on the other hand, to apprehend the bearings of this science upon Philosophy, Education, Sociology and Biology. The second motive for this book was my conviction that the time has come when we must modify some of our psychological principles and conceptions, with reference to the more recent investigations of the thought-processes. This has offered a difficult problem, and one which it would be impertinent to regard as adequately solved. It might well be contended that our present knowledge is all too incomplete to justify the incorporation of such data in a general textbook. Were it not that they have such important bearings upon psychological interpretation, I should agree in this. But for one who is convinced that new principles of interpretation are now demanded, it is no longer possible to teach the old Psychology, in which sensation and association are the chief foundations. Believing that purposive direction and imageless contents are facts which must be increasingly dealt with in modern Psychology, I have not hesitated to incorporate them into this book, and to use them as suggestions for a systematic point of view. I have tried, however, to avoid the dogmatic tone, and to present the facts as impartially as I could". (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved).
